Larry Wilmore to Milo on Bill Maher’s ‘Overtime’: ‘Go F— Yourself’ (Video)

Milo Yiannapoulos’ appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher” might have been somewhat tepid. But on “Overtime,” the YouTube exclusive “Real Time” aftershow, the sparks flew furiously when panelist Larry Wilmore tore into Yiannopoulos when the Breitbart editor went off on a transphobic rant.

At the start of the 13-minute edition of “Overtime,” Maher asked Yiannopoulos why he singled out a transgender woman during a recent university appearance. Yiannopoulos justified his behavior with a rant aimed at the transgender community generally. (You can read more about that here.)

Yiannopoulos then defended efforts to force transgender people to use bathrooms assigned to their birth gender, a position Maher called “not unreasonable.” Wilmore spoke up, comparing the struggle of transgender people to the struggles of gays. He said it was easy to scapegoat an entire group based on extreme examples.

Things heated up from there as Wilmore and fellow panelist Malcolm Nance pushed back, until Yiannapoulos resorted to ad hominem attack.

“We were having such a nice time, but you [Bill Maher] always have such awful people on your show,” Yiannopoulos said. “They’re so stupid.”

After a flustered Maher began to talk back, Yiannopoulos continued: “You need to start inviting higher IQ guests.”

That’s when Wilmore had had enough. “Hold on Bill,” he said, turning to Yiannapoulos, to calmly add, “You can go f— yourself.”

Moments later, he objected to Yiannopoulos’ insults at actress Leslie Jones: “Leslie Jones is not barely literate, you can go f— yourself for that as well.”

At that, Maher weighed in, castigating Yiannopoulos for the personal attack, adding about Wilmore, “this guy has done things that allowed you to f—ing live.”

The Most Common Cocktail Sweeteners and How to Use Them

If there’s one ingredient that most cocktails call for, it’s some kind of sweetener. But between all the syrups, sugars, and honeys, things can get confusing. Here’s what you need to know to mix the best drinks at home.

In this video from the Cocktail Chemistry YouTube channel, you’ll learn about the five major sweeteners, and how to make and use them.

  • Simple syrup: A mix of one part sugar to one part water (by weight) heated on the stove top until the sugar is dissolved. The default sweetener used in most cocktails at 50% sweetness.
  • Rich simple syrup: A mix of two parts sugar to one part water at 66% sweetness, made the same way as simple syrup. Usually used for spirit-forward drinks where you want as little dilution as possible, like an old-fashioned.
  • Maple syrup: “Grade B” maple syrup, at around 67% sweetness, can be used as an alternative to rich simple syrup, and some cocktails call for it specifically.
  • Agave syrup: Very sweet at 75% sweetness, but can be used as a substitute for simple syrup if you add 50g of water for every 100g of agave. Some cocktails also call for agave straight, and it goes well with lemon-based cocktails.
  • Honey: Coming in at 82% sweetness, clover honey is the sweetest of cocktail mixers. It’s rarely used in cocktail recipes straight-up due to its viscosity, but can be a simple syrup substitute if you add 64g of water for every 100g of honey.

Now you should be able to mix some sweeteners at home and use them for the right cocktails. Cheers!

‘Fist Fight’ Star JoAnna Garcia Swisher Promises a ‘Lot of Heart’ in Ice Cube, Charlie Day Comedy (Video)

“Fist Fight” stars Ice Cube and Charlie Day as two school teachers who plan to fight each other in the parking lot — but JoAnna Garcia Swisher, who also stars in the film, promises the film doesn’t only provide laughs but has a lot of heart as well.

“This is a perfect time, this is one of those things — not to get too deep into the deeper meaning of the movie — but there is a lot of heart in this movie,” Swisher told TheWrap’s Stuart Brazell.

“The only way you can unleash these crazy comedians in a situation like this — which they actually did, sort of unleash them and film the whole process — is if you have that heart, so we have a good balance.

“It’s not a huge think piece, you just go there and have fun and enjoy,” she added.

The comedy, directed by Richie Keen, also stars Christina Hendricks, Tracy Morgan, Jillian Bell and Kumail Nanjiani. Swisher plays Day’s wife who is 10 months pregnant and is about to pop.

Martial Arts Expert Teaches How to Block Donald Trump’s Handshake (Video)

We’ve all seen Donald Trump’s weird handshake by now. When you shake his hand, he yanks your hand towards him and gives it a firm pat while sporting a wide grin. Recent political figures on the receiving end of this handshake include Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

But if you want to avoid this awkward fate, don’t worry: the Relson Gracie Academy of Jiu-Jitsu has you covered. Robin Gieseler, a fourth-degree black belt at the Academy’s dojo in Columbus, Ohio, has put out a video that teaches you how to turn the handshake into a goose neck wrist-lock. But before he starts, Gieseler would like to point out that he is “not suggesting that you do this to the President.”

So how do you do it? Well, when the Donald in your life pulls your hand towards him, let him take your entire body with you. Then you can go to work.

“I step in with the outside foot. I wrap around the elbow,” Gieseler explains as he walks through the motions. “As I do that, I’m going to block his arm from here, I bend the wrist in, the other hand wraps over the top of the knuckles and boom — now you have what we call a goose neck.”

Once he concludes the lesson, Gieseler assures the Secret Service that if he and Trump ever cross paths he “probably won’t wrist-lock the President.” The key word is “probably.” Keep an eye on him, agents.

PewDiePie Apologizes for Anti-Semitic Jokes: ‘I Admit the Joke Itself Went Too Far’ (Video)

YouTube Star PewDiePie has apologized for the anti-semitic jokes that caused Maker Studios and YouTube to drop him this past week, but says the media took his comments out of context.

“I’m sorry for the words that I used, as I know they offended people,” he said in a video posted Thursday. “And I admit the joke itself went too far.”

PewDiePie, whose real name is Felix Kjellberg, was dropped by the company after videos including anti-semitic jokes were uncovered by the Wall Street Journal.

According to the report, Kjellberg posted a video on Jan. 11 featuring footage of two men laughing as they hold up a banner reading “Death to all Jews.” In addition, the paper found nine other instances of anti-semitic jokes on his channel.

However, in his response video, PewDiePie said that the Wall Street Journal and other outlets that covered the reports had taken his jokes out of context. He added that over the years, he’s become less tolerant of the media, which “blatantly misrepresent people for their own personal gain.” He says that he was attacked “by the media to try to discredit me and decrease my influence and economic worth.” He added it was a “personal attack” to portray him as a “Nazi.”

“Old-school media does not like internet personalities because they’re scared of us,” PewDiePie said. “We have so much influence and such a large voice — and I don’t think they understand it.”

Three of Kjellberg’s videos have since been removed, including the one posted on Jan. 11 and another posted on Jan. 22 that showed a man dressed up as Jesus Christ saying, “Hitler did absolutely nothing wrong.”

Kjellberg’s channel currently has more than 53 million subscribers. Last December, he topped Forbes’ list of the highest-paid YouTubers of 2016, having made more than $15 million.

This is not the first time the 27-year-old has come under fire for controversial jokes. He previously threatened to shut down his channel after reaching 50 million subscribers, in what turned out to be a publicity stunt.

“I definitely made mistakes like this before but it’s always been a growing and learning experience for me,” he said in the video. “This whole situation has definitely been that for me and it’s something I’m going to keep in mind moving forward.”

Ryan Murphy Says Next ‘American Horror Story ‘ Will Be ‘About the Election We Just Went Through’ (Video)

Ryan Murphy is getting topical and political with the next installment of “American Horror Story.”

While visiting Andy Cohen’s “WWHL” on Wednesday, Murphy revealed that the topic of the seventh season will be the 2016 presidential election.

“I don’t have a title but the season when we begin shooting it is going to be about the election that we just went through,” Murphy said. “So I think that will be interesting for a lot of people.”

Cohen was left speechless — an epic feat in itself — and then asked, “Wow, oh wow … will there be a Trump in it?”

“Maybe,” Murphy responded.

The previous six installments of the hit FX horror anthology series have often been deeply rooted both in the past and the present. For example, the “Roanoke” characters were haunted by members of the 1590s Roanoke Colony.

However, it is not yet known if Season 7 will have a historical aspect or if it will be firmly set in the 21st century.

The seventh installment of “American Horror Story” begins filming in June, with Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters returning to the cast.

FX announced in January that there would be at least two more seasons of Ryan’s terrifying creation.

“Feud: Bette and Joan” premieres on FX March 5 at 10 p.m.

Dule Hill on What Drew Him to CBS Legal Drama ‘Doubt’: ‘It’s Love, It’s Lies and It’s Law’ (Video)

Emmy-nominated actor Dule Hill, who got his break on NBC’s White House drama “The West Wing,” returns to his drama roots on CBS’ new legal drama “Doubt,” starring Katherine Heigl and Laverne Cox.

Hill, who also stars on HBO’s “Ballers” alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, told the Wrap’s Stuart Brazell in a new interview what attracted him to the role.

“For me it was the other side of the equation,” said Hill. “Ever since 9/11 most of the shows on television now are about the prosecutor — find the bad guy, putting him behind bars, lock him up, and you stay there.”

“Doubt,” which also stars Steven Pasquale, Dreama Walker, Elliott Gould and Kobi Libii, follows a smart, chic, successful defense lawyer at a boutique firm who starts to fall for her charismatic client — who may or may not be guilty of a brutal crime.

The lawyers on the show are “struggling to try and balance their personal lives while standing up for the rights of the accused,” Hill told Brazell. “The innocent, the guilty and everything in between — it’s love, it’s lies and it’s law.”

The actor plays a partner in the law firm who is very tight with Heigl’s character, until she is wowed by the smooth-talking Pasquale.

Hill went on to explain what makes the show stand out from the other legal dramas. “‘Doubt’ is about the other side of the equation, just because you said something first, just because you said something the loudest, doesn’t mean that what you’re saying is right,” he explained.

“And maybe, just maybe, there’s another way to look at this and that really drew me in because especially in this day and age where there is so much screaming and yelling, I think it’s a good message to have out there that there is another side of the equation, there’s another story to tell,” Hill said.

“The way the government is coming against you, you need people who are going to stand up for individual rights and that’s what this show is all about.”

Metallica’s James Hetfield Was ‘Livid’ Over Grammys Glitches, Lars Ulrich Says (Video)

Enter mad man.

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich appeared on “The Late Late Show With James Corden” on Tuesday night, revealing that the band’s frontman, James Hetfield, was “livid” over their glitch-damaged duet with Lady Gaga at Sunday’s Grammy Awards.

“I haven’t seen him like that in 20 years,” the drummer said of Hetfield’s mood backstage after the performance. “I mean, he was livid. I mean, he’s aged really well and he’s a pretty chill guy, but the first five or 10 minutes in that dressing room was not a lot of fun.”

“But like they say, the show must go on, and we fought through it,” Ulrich added.

The group’s duet with Lady Gaga at the Grammys was marred by technical difficulties, including a microphone snafu.

On Tuesday, Ulrich characterized the performance as a “clusterf—,” but noted that the chaos added to the energy of the show.

Jake Tapper Tells Conan O’Brien That Trump Is ‘Exhausting’ (Video)

CNN anchor Jake Tapper continued his rounds on late night TV with an appearance on “Conan,” in which he said it is “exhausting” covering the “chaos” coming out of Donald Trump’s White House. But Tapper suspects that such chaos might be a feature rather than a bug.

“The president seems to thrive on chaos,” Tapper explained to Conan O’Brien. “It was like that during the campaign. It obviously worked. He also seems to like having different competing groups of power competing against each other and we’d heard about that from his business enterprise that he liked different people competing with each other, bouncing off each other. Obviously, ‘The Apprentice’ was like that, as well.”

Also Read: Jake Tapper: Trump’s NBC ‘Apprentice’ Deal Is ‘an Inherent Conflict of Interest’

For a specific example, Tapper discussed the recent resignation of Trump’s national security adviser Michael Flynn, saying that the information coming from the White House regarding the Army general seemed to change every hour.

“We were told that General Flynn was fired, then we were told he resigned, then we were told he was fired. These are all on-the-record statements made by different people in the administration. It’s very confusing.”

Also Read: Samantha Bee Praises Jake Tapper, CNN for Being Tough on Kellyanne Conway (Video)

Tapper has become very popular among the anti-Trump crowd for his relentless coverage of the Trump administration in the past month, even as Trump and his camp continuously attack CNN as “fake news.” When addressing Steve Bannon’s remark that the mainstream media should “keep its mouth shut,” Tapper simply replied to Bannon’s demand with a deadpan “no” on the air. He has also become a major figure on “Saturday Night Live,” with Beck Bennett playing him in sketches that lampoon the Trump administration.

When O’Brien said that the chaos has to die down at some point, Tapper provided a depressing reply: “If you’re looking for me to reassure you, I cannot.”

Watch ‘Life, Animated’s’ Original Short, ‘Land of the Lost Sidekicks’ (Exclusive Video)

When director Roger Ross Williams set out to make a documentary about Owen Suskind, a young autistic man who learned to communicate from watching animated Disney movies, he knew animation would be essential to his film.

But Williams didn’t realize until later that his film, the Oscar-nominated “Life, Animated,” would include three different layers of animation, including Disney film clips that the studio granted him permission to use, and original animated sequences that illustrated scenes from the life of his subject.

And most importantly, his film also includes “The Land of the Lost Sidekicks,” a new six-minute animated short based on a story that Owen Suskind wrote about a land where the second bananas from Disney movies — Rafiki from “The Lion King,” Baloo from “The Jungle Book,” Iago from “Aladdin” and more — unite to fight off evil alongside Owen himself.

The short, which is included in “Life, Animated” and is now being shown exclusively at TheWrap, is based on Suskind’s drawings, which have been interpreted by the French animation company Mac Guff with the permission of Disney. Suskind himself provides the narration.

“It’s a film within a film, and it gives the film so much more complexity, because there are so many layers of animation in this film,” said Williams, who won an Oscar for the short doc “Music by Prudence” in 2010 and now serves as a governor in the Academy’s Documentary Branch.

Seeing “The Land of the Lost Sidekicks” assembled by Mac Guff, he added, was a particular treat.

“That was a magical part of the process, when it first came together,” he said. “I was in Paris with 15 young animators bringing Owen’s inner world to life. I looked out the window and there was the Eiffel Tower, and all these animators were lined up telling Owen’s story, with his face and his characters on their screens.

“I was in tears, and I thought, ‘When does this ever happen in documentaries?’”

Stephen Colbert Invites Trump Adviser to Tell Lies on ‘Late Show’ (Video)

Stephen Colbert has extended an invitation to White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller to be a guest on “The Late Show. “If you don’t show up, I’m going to call you a liar… if you do show up, I’m going to call you a liar to your face,” the host taunted on Monday night’s episode.

Colbert made the offer after showing a video of Miller angrily saying he would defend Donald Trump on “any show, anywhere, anytime” during a recent interview on ABC’s “This Week.”

The comedian also mocked Miller’s recent statement that “the powers of the president to protect our country are very substantial and will not be questioned.”

Colbert pondered, “Will not be questioned? Let me test that theory. What the f–k are you talking about?”

The “Late Show” host criticized Miller’s comment that the border wall will pay for itself, saying, “I thought Mexico was paying for it.”

Miller appeared on numerous talk shows on Sunday to defend President Trump’s travel ban and criticize the court that ruled against it, but not everyone was a fan. MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” co-hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough were among the many pundits to bash Miller.

“Maybe he’s just stupid. Maybe he’s just dumb. Maybe he’s just ignorant and maybe I shouldn’t be so tough on him,” Scarborough said.

MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski called the events that resulted in the resignation of National Security Advisor General Michael Flynn, “troubling on a deep, global level.”

Flynn’s departure was announced late Monday night following news he misled Vice President Mike Pence and other senior White House officials about information he shared with the Russian ambassador to the United States.

Co-host Joe Scarborough pointed out that Brzezinski once predicted Flynn wouldn’t last long in the job.

“I think this is good news for those who have been concerned that this White House has some people in it that are really not cut out for their jobs,” she said. “Flynn had a very, very, too-tight relationship with Donald Trump that also raised questions about his relationship with Russia, which still remains a big question.”

Scarborough said he has been warning Trump for months that he shouldn’t battle the intelligence community — a sign that he feels POTUS watches his show.

“They were warned a month ago and didn’t act on it,” Scarborough stressed, explaining that Flynn’s resignation wouldn’t have happened if a “patriot” didn’t leak information to the Washington Post.

“Was Mike Pence the only person in the White House kept in the dark? Because we certainly know the White House counsel had to know. You gotta believe the President of the United States had to know. Certainly the Justice Department knew,” Scarborough said. “There has to be a very long list of people in the White House who kept the vice president of the United States in the dark.”

Brzezinski responded, “It goes back to the central question, what is the relationship with Russia? There is something. It’s not nothing anymore.”

“We all experience pain and loss, and often we become inaudible,” Beyoncé said in accepting a Grammy for Urban Album of the Year for Lemonade. “My intention for the film and album was to create a body of work that will give a voice to our pain, our struggles, our darkness and our history.”

The singer took the stage with a broad smile for her daughter, Blue Ivy, whose presence seemed to underscore the entire speech.

“It’s important to me to show images to my children that reflect their beauty,” Beyoncé continued, “So they can grow up in a world where they look in the mirror, first through their own families, as well as the news, the Super Bowl, the Olympics, the White House and the Grammys and see themselves and have no doubt that they are beautiful, intelligent and capable.” Read more…

Bernie Sanders Nixes Notion of Starting a New Political Party (Video)

Sen. Bernie Sanders put to rest efforts that were launched last week called “Draft Bernie for a People’s Party,” telling Chuck Todd on Sunday’s “Meet the Press” that his muscle is behind reforming the Democratic Party as it currently exists.

“What we need to do right now is focusing on bringing the American people together around a progressive agenda,” the Independent senator from Vermont told Todd.

“American people want to raise the minimum wage, they want to build our crumbling infrastructure, they want the wealthiest people in this country to start paying their fair share of taxes, they want the United States to join the rest of the industrialized world and guarantee health care to all people as a right.”

Former Sanders delegates and staff members who believe strongly in his vision launched the “Draft Bernie for a People’s Party” movement last week. Their mission was to create a nationwide effort to convince Sanders “to found a new party rooted in the progressive principles that awoke a political revolution during his campaign for the presidency.”

Sanders, however, will not be swayed. He told Todd, “Right now I am working to bring fundamental reform to the Democratic Party, to open the doors to the Democratic Party — working people, lower income people to young people who have not felt welcome in the embrace of the Democratic Party.”

‘Bill & Ted’s Excellent Middle-Aged Adventure’? Keanu Reeves Teases the Possibility (Video)

Bill and Ted may be pushing close to that half-century mark but, according to Keanu Reeves, there may be one “excellent adventure” left in them.

While promoting his current film “John Wick: Chapter 2,” Reeves stopped by Britain’s “The Graham Norton Show,” where he teased a talked-about plot for “Bill & Ted 3.”

“‘Bill & Ted: Still Alive,’” the actor joked. “It would be Bill and Ted in their 50s. I mean, that just makes me laugh, right there.”

“There’s a cool story. Basically, they’re supposed to write a song to save the world and they haven’t done that yet,” Reeves said. “So the pressure of having to save the world — their marriages are falling apart, their kids are kind of mad at them. But then someone comes from the future and tells them if they don’t write the song it’s just not the world, it’s the universe. So they have to save the universe because time is breaking apart. So then elements of the past come in.”

Whoopi Goldberg, who was also guesting on the talk show, cracked up at the idea and jumped into the conversation. “I must be that person. I have to be the person from the future. I have to be!”

Reeves had no problem with that, saying, “You’re in it!”

To quote Ted, “Excellent!”

The original movie, “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” was a 1989 sci-fi comedy buddy film turned cult classic starring Reeves and Alex Winter as two slackers who travel through time to gather historical data for a high school project. The sequel, “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey,” was released two years later. A live-action TV series, as well as an animated series followed, along with a comic book and video games.
